Baseline Anterior Segment Photography

Overview:

After fluorescein staining, high-resolution anterior segment photographs are taken to document the condition of the ocular surface. These images serve as a baseline for monitoring the progression of dry eye disease or response to treatment over time.

Procedure Description:

  1. Image Capture Setup:
Using a slit lamp biomicroscope equipped with a digital camera, standardized photos of the anterior eye segment are taken. A cobalt blue light and yellow barrier filter may be used to enhance visibility of fluorescein staining.

  2. Photographic Views:
    Multiple views are captured, including:

    • Frontal view of the cornea and conjunctiva

    • Temporal and nasal conjunctiva

    • Upper and lower palpebral conjunctiva (if needed)

    • Tear meniscus height (optional for dry eye evaluation)

  3. Baseline Documentation:
These images provide visual documentation of:

    • Staining patterns

    • Conjunctival injection or redness

    • Lid margin or meibomian gland status

    • Tear film breakup or thinning

  4. Clinical Use:
The baseline photos are stored securely in the patient’s record and compared to future images to track:

    • Treatment response

    • Disease progression

    • Any new ocular surface changes

Why It Matters:
Baseline anterior photos are essential for objective, long-term management of dry eye and ocular surface diseases. They provide visual proof of treatment efficacy and aid in patient education.
