Lacrifill™ Punctal Plugs
Overview:
Lacrifill™ punctal plugs are dissolvable implants used to treat dry eye disease by reducing tear drainage and enhancing ocular hydration. Made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA)—a substance naturally found in the body—they not only block tear outflow but also deliver gentle, sustained hydration to the eye. These soft, biocompatible hydrogel plugs gradually dissolve over time, typically lasting up to six months.
Why It's Important:
In dry eye disease, tears may evaporate too quickly or drain too rapidly, causing symptoms such as:
-
Dryness or gritty sensation
-
Burning or stinging
-
Fluctuating vision
-
Sensitivity to wind or air
-
Dependence on artificial tears
Lacrifill plugs offer a dual benefit: they retain tears and enhance hydration through hyaluronic acid, promoting better symptom relief and ocular surface protection.
Procedure Description:
Patient Evaluation:
Before plug insertion, a complete dry eye assessment is performed. This includes:
-
Ocular surface staining and tear volume measurement
-
Schirmer’s test and tear film assessment
-
Evaluation of punctal anatomy
-
Review of symptoms and prior treatment response
Plug Insertion:
Insertion is a quick, in-office procedure:
-
A topical anesthetic drop is applied
-
The plug is gently inserted into the upper and/or lower puncta
-
Made from HA hydrogel, the plug conforms to the punctal anatomy and slowly dissolves over several months
Follow-Up:
Patients are monitored for:
-
Improvement in dry eye symptoms
-
Plug position and gradual dissolution
-
Any signs of over-tearing or discomfort (rare)
Clinical Significance:
Lacrifill plugs provide:
-
Hydration + Occlusion: HA draws in moisture while the plug prevents tear drainage
-
Biocompatibility: HA is well tolerated and naturally absorbed by the body
-
Convenience: Dissolves over ~6 months—no need for removal
-
Versatility: Works well as a stand-alone therapy or combined with eye drops and anti-inflammatory treatments
Support Tear Retention and Surface Hydration
By combining the occlusive benefit of a punctal plug with the moisturizing power of hyaluronic acid, Lacrifill offers a next-generation solution for dry eye relief. It's a smart option for patients seeking longer-lasting comfort without permanent devices.
